PRIMULA veris
Native cowslip. Highly fragrant yellow flowers on tall stems. Flowering from March to May. Ht. 20cm. Sp. 20cm. Moist fertile soil. Sun or part shade. AGM.
Cowslip or “Cussloppe” (meaning Cow dung) was the Old English name for P. veris; the name derived from the belief that wherever a cow lifted its tail a cowslip sprang up. Presumably it was our genteel Victorian ancestors who prettified the name to Cowslip. Old herbals suggest an infusion of the flowers as a cure for palsy. Cowslip wine is truly delicious. P. veris thrives in rich heavy soil and thin poor soil will need enriching – so don’t spare the cowpat! A perfect companion in the garden for Primula vulgaris. Deliciously scented
