IRIS reticulata – Winter-Flowering Iris (Species form)
A charming violet-blue Iris producing early flowers marked with a yellow and white blotch. This species form is slightly taller than many of the modern hybrids, flowering in February–March to brighten the late winter garden.
Native to Iran and Iraq, where it grows in alpine meadows and open scrubby woodland, it thrives in any well-drained soil and is happy in full sun or part shade.
Ideal for stone troughs, raised beds or pots on a windowsill where its exquisitely shaped flowers can be admired up close. Best planted in generous groups for impact.
Care: Top dress with a high-phosphorus or organic slow-release fertiliser each autumn.
