Fritillaria meleagris Alba

An elegant white-flowered form of the native Snake’s Head Fritillary, prized for its refined, luminous bells which hang delicately from slender stems in mid-spring. Unlike the chequered purple forms, the flowers are clear ivory-white, sometimes faintly washed with soft green veining, giving a quieter and more understated presence in the garden.

Naturally suited to damp meadow conditions, this species thrives in moist but well-drained soil in sun or light shade, where it can be allowed to naturalise through grass, orchard planting or the front of a border. Flowering from March into April, it reaches around 20–30 cm in height and combines beautifully with early spring bulbs and naturalistic planting schemes.

A hardy and long-lived bulb once established, Fritillaria meleagris ‘Alba’ benefits from minimal disturbance and will gradually form small colonies where conditions suit, bringing a soft, meadow-like character to the spring garden.
