GALANTHUS. The Latin name for Snowdrop coined by Linnaeus means milk flower. Snowdrops are not native to Britain, they were probably first introduced from Europe by monks during the mediaeval period. G. nivalis is native to Southern and Central Europe. Galanthus only gained their English name “Snowdrop” in the seventeenth century. Previously they were referred to as “bulbous Violets”. Snowdrops close their flowers at night to encapsulate the daytime warmth; the temperature inside the bell is sometimes as much as two degrees warmer than the surrounding air. Snowdrops look best planted under hazel trees. Snowdrops like a fertile moisture retentive but not waterlogged soil and grow best in part shade.
