GALANTHUS elwesii Lord Monostictus
Select larger form of G. elwesii var monostrictus. Large bulb, flower and leaf. Strong horseshoe marking on inner perianth. Glaucous foliage. Strong grower.

GALANTHUS . The Latin name for Snowdrop coined by Linnaeus means milk flower. Snowdrops are not native to Britain, they were probably first introduced from Europe by monks during the mediaeval period. G. nivalis is native to Southern and Central Europe. Galanthus only gained their English name “Snowdrop” in the seventeenth century. Previously they were referred to as “bulbous Violets”. Snowdrops close their flowers at night to encapsulate the daytime warmth; the temperature inside the bell is sometimes as much as two degrees warmer than the surrounding air. Snowdrops look best planted under hazel trees. Snowdrops like a fertile moisture retentive but not waterlogged soil and grow best in part shade.

Sometimes it is necessary to ‘cut back’ your plants for the good of the plants and to insure safe packing and arrival of your order. We only do this to herbaceous perennials that will rejuvenate stronger from the base.

Bareroot plants ordered for collection from the nursery can be ready 10 working days after the order has been placed
Collections can be picked up any day by appointment except Sunday.
