Our mail order service
Woottens Nursery have been running an efficient mail order service for over 15 years.
We pride ourselves on the following –

  • Our mail order service runs all year round January-December
  • Our plants are securely yet minimally packaged in biodegradable materials including corn starch chips
  • Our plants are delivered the day after they are packed on a 24hour fast overnight service to ensure they arrive as fresh as possible
  • We have tried and tested many couriers to find you the best reliable, traceable service available.
  • We aim to send out strong well established plants in 2litre or 9cm pots*. Ready for planting out. We do not send plugs or liners

*Some field grown plants such as Irises and Hemerocallis are dispatched as bare root plants see details below
The majority of our container grown herbaceous plants are dispatched within 4 working days. Although rare there may be a delay often at the beginning of the season if plants aren’t ready for sale. We advise you to contact the nursery if you have enquiries regarding this.
With exception of Bearded Irises and Snowdrops all our bareroot stock is dispatched throughout the year within 10 working days of receiving the order.
During periods of extreme drought or frost we may postpone digging as this would be detrimental to the plants.

Possible changes to your order

Any plants that may be to follow – Due to availability and seasonality your delivery may have been split into separate parts. There will be a note in your delivery to explain this and to give an approximate dispatch date for the remaining plants

Any plants that are not available or have been substituted – We do try our best to contact you before dispatch should a plant have sold out between the time of your order and our website updating. Should we not be able to contact you we will either substitute with a close variety chosen by one of our expert horticultural team or where this isn’t possible we will mark the item ‘not available’ and reduce the cost of your order and where appropriate reduce the carriage charge.

Any changes in pot sizes and prices – We do try our best to contact you before dispatch should any pot sizes differ from what you have ordered. Should we not be able to contact you we will send the nearest pot size available and reduce the cost if the pot size is smaller than requested. (If the pot size we send is larger the cost will remain the same)
The smallest size we dispatch is a 9cm pot that is ready for planting out. Your delivery note will indicate the price difference on your total bill.

Plant hardiness
When ordering in the cooler months do be aware of a plants hardiness category
Below is an approximate guide:

  • Full hardy plants – survive temperatures -15 degrees  or lower
  • Hardy Plants – down to -5degrees
  • Half Hardy Plants – down to 0 degrees
  • Tender Plants – down to 5 degrees

Remember that often a delicate plants roots will freeze quicker in a pot than in the earth. As a general rule plants prefer to be dry if they are too cold. Overwatered plants in cold weather will perish much faster.

Cutting back and plant care
At certain times of the year it may be necessary for us to cut back perennial plants. We do this for two reasons –
The good of the plant
Throughout the year and especially before planting herbaceous perennials require cutting back, this stops the plant getting stressed, enables it to put on fresh young growth and encourages it to strengthen root production for planting out.
Courier costs
We also have a maximum height restriction for packing regulated by the courier therefore at the peak of a plants flowering season it may be over that restriction for packing and maybe cut back in order to keep our courier costs as low as possible and to prevent breakages of tall delicate stems in transit.
Pot sizes and recently potted plants
If we feel a plant requires potting on at the time of your order we may pot on the plant and label it ‘recently potted’
If the plant is not rooted out to the edge of the pot we will charge you for the smaller size plant and recommend that you delay planting out this plant until the roots have reached the pot edge. Alternatively if planting out is a must then simply take care when planting and plant with our compost around the plant so it benefits from the slow release fertiliser in the compost.

Some plants we may feel haven’t grown into their pot fully and require being potted down a size.
As plants grow at hugely diverse rates some require a smaller pot – remember a larger pot size doesn’t mean a better plant!
Again if we have done this there will be some loose compost around the plant – simply take care when planting or wait for the plant to root fully in its new container.
