Galanthus
The Latin name coined by Linnaeus means milkflower. Galanthus nivalis was first introduced into England by monks during the mediaeval period.  Snowdrops were traditionally used to deck the Lady Altar on the feast of the Purification of the Virgin.  Snowdrops like fertile moisture retentive soil and grow best in part shade. I always plant them under hazelnuts.  Catkins and snowdrops are for me as inseparable as Raspberries and cream! Snowdrops are sent out in the green in February.
